Shan · six   Mukhi · gates

Close the six.

A dim, trembling centre is surrounded by six open gates, and through each gate a stream of specks pours inward. Tap a gate to close it and its stream stops. With all six closed, the centre stops trembling and glows steadily and brightly.

Shanmukhi is the closing of the six gates — the eyes, the ears, the nostrils — with the fingers, so that for a few minutes nothing comes in. The face, which spends its day meeting the world, is given nothing to meet. What follows is quiet, then a brightness that seems to come from behind the eyes. Tap each gate to close it, and see what the centre does when the world stops arriving.
