Bhuta Shuddhi

Bhuta Shuddhi means “purification of the elements,” and is a process of purifying the 5 elements within the human system.

The basis for all creation, including the physical body, is the group of five elements: earth, water, wind, fire, and space. The wellbeing of the body and mind can be established by purifying these five elements within the human system. This process also shapes the body into a stepping stone towards one’s ultimate wellbeing.

Touch one.

The transparent outer shell of a human figure stands in the stage, empty. Points of light drift in from outside it, each element from its own direction, and fill the shape from within: water in the greatest number, then earth low in the body, then air streaming across, space drifting slowly throughout, and a few embers of fire rising. They mingle rather than settle into layers, and the figure gradually glows with the colours of all five. The names of the five elements appear beside the body; touching or hovering over one brings that element forward, dims the rest, and shows the share of the body it makes up.

Earth, water, fire, air and space — the five compose everything there is, and this body with them. Each is present in its own measure: water in the greatest part, earth the substance, fire the warmth that keeps it all working, air the movement, space the room for it. Out of balance, one flares while another stalls, and we feel it as heaviness, heat, restlessness, dullness. Bhuta Shuddhi returns the five to their own measure, and a body in its right proportion is a clean one. Touch any one of them to see how much of you it is.

I've had such a lovely experience practising with Persis at Yoga Quest. I joined her early morning classes and learned Yogasanas, Surya Kriya and Bhuta Shuddhi under her guidance. As an Isha-certified instructor, she teaches the practices with so much care and respect, but what made the experience especially meaningful for me was Persis herself. She is incredibly warm, patient and genuinely caring. She was always there to guide me when I needed help with my practices, and she also took the time to listen and support me on a more personal level. I genuinely loved going to her 5:30am sessions. No matter how early it was, I would always leave feeling lighter, calmer and so glad I had gone. My time practising with Persis was something I really enjoyed and looked forward to. I have a lot of respect and affection for her and would wholeheartedly recommend Yoga Quest. ❤️
